Basic Hygiene Items Needed By Senior Citizens

It’s so unfair that we lose the ability to care for ourselves just as we most need to! Basic hygiene is one of the first things to go first even through it’s not the fault of our elderly loved ones.

Dexterity wanes, arthritic fingers don’t do what they should, and even the act of getting into a shower is exhausting. That’s why you should stock up on basic hygiene items for an elderly friend.

The basic hygiene items I’ve chosen to spotlight will help your loved one remain as independent (and clean) for as long as possible. Here’s some items that help with those who might be bed bound either temporarily or permanently. The shampoo caps are even nice to have around on a boat or when camping to just freshen up the hair. And, the personal washcloths are excellent to keep in a car when traveling too.

And, before someone blasts me for considering these basic hygiene items ‘gifts for senior citizens’, remember that these are items to make your elderly loved one feel clean and comfortable. I consider them gifts, even if they’re not the sexiest gift ever….

Hygiene Items For Senior Citizens – Focus On Hair

I was lucky if I could wash Mom’s hair once a week; taking a shower just exhausted her.

I found ways to freshen her hair up every 3 days or so though; she loved it. The oil was whisked away and her hair was left with a beautiful shine. It smelled great!

Note: don’t freak out when you pour some shampoo on your elderly loved one’s head and the shampoo is purple! That’s the blueing that makes the white hair shine!

Basic Hygiene Items For A Senior Citizen – Focus On Body

Mom spent a lot of time the last month in her bed in the living room. Getting her into a shower was almost impossible so I worked mostly with items that I could give her a once over in bed.

The pre-moistened wash clothes were quite nice, not only for Mom, but also for use in our camper when we’re camping without water. For Mom, I just tossed the pack right in the microwave to heat them a bit for her comfort.
