Toilet Seat Risers Save Wear And Tear On Elderly Knees
One of the first things to go as we age is our ability to continue good hygiene, especially in the bathroom (ok, it’s not the ‘first’ thing to go – I think we all know what that is)….
But, it’s a fact of life; aching knees make it difficult to get onto and off of the ‘pot’ and arthritic hands make it difficult to keep ourselves clean. Ah, but I’ve found some fixes for both situations.
My favorite adaptive bathroom need for senior citizens is (insert drum roll, please), raised toilet seats, aka toilet seat risers. And, for the second situation? Bathroom wipes! You’ll see both below along with a few other adaptive bathroom needs.
Warning: I have a septic system in my old house (built in 1857). And, since I used a lot of bathroom wipes when caring for my Mom, once she was gone, I had to have my septic tank cleaned three times (THREE TIMES!) to rid the tank of the residue of the wipes. Eh, it was still worth it though and I’d do it again. Just be aware that bathroom wipes are not septic friendly, no matter what the package says.
ABOUT TOILET SEAT RISERS
1. Toilet seat risers come in 2 main styles, with or without arms. Depending on the layout of your bathroom, you might have to have a raised toilet seat without arms – ie, if the toilet is very close to the wall, you might not be able to use one with arms.
2. Toilet seat risers come in 2 shapes – round and oval. Older toilets are most likely round, but make sure you select the right shape as an oval raised toilet seat with not fit on a round toilet!
3. Seat risers come in various heights, generally from the shortest which give just a 2″ rise to the tallest risers which add around 5″ in height. If your senior loved one is very short, make sure not to order a toilet seat riser that is too tall as they their feet may not reach the ground!

Bathroom Wipes
Here’s some decent wipes that you should keep handy. My suggestion is to put a box of these hygiene wipes in every bathroom that your senior citizen friend may use. I always liked to keep the Charmin To Go Flushable Wipes in the tote bag I carried when I’d take Mom on outings:
