Walkers Can Make The Difference Between An Upright Senior Citizen and One That’s – Well, Fallen And Can’t Get Up….
Mom was able to walk without a walker until she was around 90. I visited my folks in Arizona one time and noted that she was just a bit unsteady on her feet. Without her knowing. I went right out to the nearest medical supply store and bought a walker. I brought it into the house under her wary eye only to find that she took to it like a duck to water. She was never without her walker again.
When my Mom came to live with me in Maryland, I actually bought two walkers – one for the downstairs and one for upstairs. Having these walkers meant that I could relax my vigilance when Mom was ‘on the move.’
When choosing the perfect walker for you elderly loved one, take height into consideration. Some walkers expand to a height suitable for most taller adult men and some, like the ‘Junior Walker’ I bought Mom are meant for those little old ladies you see rambling around.
Here’s some very good walkers on Amazon.com. They range from very basic to ones with seats and hand brakes (for the house, Mom just used basic walkers – they worked just fine).
Junior Walkers
These walkers are on the more petite side. So, if you have a house with very narrow doorways, one of these junior walkers might just fit where a regular size walker won’t. And, even though these might say ‘Child Walkers,’ they work perfectly for anyone on the shorter side.
Junior walkers seem to come with either 3″ or 5″ wheels. You can also find junior walkers without wheels, although, really, as far as Mom was concerned, a wheeled junior walker was better for her than having to lift a walker ahead of her.
