Shower Benches Make Showering Safer For A Senior Citizen

Bathrooms are notoriously dangerous places for senior citizens, especially when taking baths or showers. Combine a wet floor with a slippery bathtub or shower and, well, you can see where I’m going with this. That’s why shower benches become so very important.

There’s a few different types of shower benches on the market. Shower benches can either sit inside the tub or sit partway outside the tub – these are called shower transfer benches. Shower transfer benches are nice if you’re dealing with a senior citizen friend who cannot easily pick up their feet in order to enter the shower. With the use of a transfer bench, all your elderly loved one needs to do is sit on the bench and scoot over into the tub.

I first bought Mom a pretty simple shower chair, but, that was when she was able to step into the tub (we weren’t lucky enough to just have a shower which would have been easier). I prefer the shower benches with backs and arms, but that’s just my preference; I feel they give more stability for the elderly person.

Shower Transfer Benches

As Mom’s arthritic knees worsened, I found that a shower transfer bench gave us added assurance that she’d be safe getting into and out of the tub. The shower transfer bench allowed her to sit on it on the outside of the tub and just scoot over into the tub. It worked great, even in our teeny bathroom.
