Give The Gift Of Independence With Adaptive Silverware
Mom’s arthritic hands were numb so it was very difficult for her to hold regular handled utensils. So, I took to the internet and found some large handled knives, spoons and forks for her which worked great.
With Mom’s own set of large handled silverware (which she loved) she was able to feed herself every meal. And, I loved it too as it meant that I could go back, at least during mealtimes, to being just a daughter instead of a caregiver feeding her.
Luckily for us both, until the very last days of her life, she was able to enjoy a good bowl of soup, oatmeal, or anything else her heart desired.
If you prefer to use your regular eating utensile, you might consider buying some Ableware Built Up Handles. The handles are designed so that you can use them with anything including (but not limited to) silverware or even a pencil or pen. They’d be perfect for enlarging the handle of a tooth brush too.
Adaptive eating utencils come in weighted or non-weighted. I suggest buying both, and then just keeping the silverware that works the best for your senior citizen friend.
Also, make SURE you select the right set of adaptive silverware; buying a right handed set for a left handed person won’t help them any. That’s why the bendable silverware works for about anyone!
