I saw a pretty butterfly hair barrette at the mall one day and, on a whim, brought it home to my Mom. Little did I realize how much this $15 purchase would mean to both of us in the future.

My Mom was never without her beautiful hair clip from that day forward – ever. The first thing in the morning, when she was able, she’d slip it into her hair. As she weakened in the last days of her life, I continued the tradition by adding her hair clip to her hair every morning and removing it every evening.

When Mom died, I just couldn’t bring myself to add the clip one last time to her white hair. Instead, I substituted another clip similar to that first butterfly clip below and kept the original butterfly hair clip for myself. When I need a little extra strength, I slip it into my own hair. On stronger days, this much cherished remembrance of Mom resides on top of the bereavement lamp I was given after she died.
