Keep The Bathroom Safe For The Elderly With A Non-Slip Bathroom Rug
Bathroom rugs MUST BE not-slip/non-skid
It’s a widely known statistic that most accidents happen in the bathroom; this makes sense if you think about it. For one thing, bathroom floors are frequently wet from showers and baths and, if you don’t have the right non-slip bathroom rug down, boom! There goes your elderly loved one.
When choosing bathroom rugs for your elderly loved one, make sure to you get bathroom mats with an non-slip non-skid bottom side (they’re generally made of either PVC or Latex). Now, these bathroom rugs are positively horrible for your washer and, in fact, I had to have my washer repaired when I washed the anti-skid bottomed bathroom rug once too often; the backing separated from the mat and got stuck in the washer’s drain. That was an expensive lesson.
So, what did I do? I had to make sure Mom wasn’t going to slip getting out of the shower so I still used bath rugs with non-skid bottoms, but, I took them to the laundromat to have them washed thereby protecting my expensive washer.
When buying an non-slip bathroom rug, make sure you measure your bathroom and get the right size. I suggest covering as much floor area as you can for a few reasons:
- One larger bathroom rug will have fewer edges to trip over than 2 smaller mats.
- Covering more floor means there’s less chance of slippery water lying around.
- Anti-skid anti-slip bathroom rugs will be insulating so that your elderly loved one is not stepping onto a cold floor in the winter.
Finally, with my personal experience as my Mom’s caregiver, bathroom floor mats that have little to no pile on them are best for the elderly. For one thing, a senior citizen may shuffle their feet and easily get a toenail or toe caught in any rug with a pile. Way too often elderly toes can get stuck in a shag type of rug and down they go.
Here’s some non-slip bathroom rugs that are fine for the elderly
All of the below bathroom rugs have safety non-skid backings.
We always had memory foam bath rugs for Mom. I sort of figured that, not only are they very nice underfoot but, if she did happen to fall, they might give a bit of cushioning. It was a good theory but, alas, she fell in the wrong bathroom!
By the way, I always had at least two bathroom rugs available so that, if one was in the wash, I had another one down. Or, if one needed to be replaced (ie, a cat tore it – no names need be mentioned…), I had a spare.
