Soft Foods for Easier Eating Cookbook: Easy-to-Follow Recipes for People Who Have Chewing and Swallowing ProblemsCheck PriceNot being able to chew is a pain in the, well, in the jaw.
My elderly Mom, Gertie, was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia just shy of her 92nd birthday. She actually gave herself pneumonia by aspirating food (thanks, Mom). This is because she couldn’t chew or swallow properly.
Little did I know that aspiration pneumonia is a very common cause of this bacterial type of pneumonia in the elderly as they just don’t chew or swallow like they used to. So, what did I do? Well, after an inpatient hospitalization for the pneumonia, I set about to find out how to avoid this issue again.
One way I did just that was to buy that cookbook you see to the right up there – Soft Foods For Easier Eating Cookbook. I then set about to adapting my Mom’s favorite recipes, like the individual chicken pot pies I used to make for her. I’m happy to report that she never again had pneumonia – whew!
This cookbook is not just about the elderly though – it’s the perfect gift for anyone who is about to face the dentist chair, has TMJ, or any other jaw problems. Most of the recipes are incredibly easy to make and, yes, there’s a fair section on soups and soft lunch foods which are, by the way, totally delicious.
Also, it’s important to note that this cookbook is not just about pureeing regular food. These recipes are tried, trued, and produce a delicious texture in the foods. Even though Mom is no longer with me, I still whip out this cookbook on a cold winter’s day when I’m yearning for a delicious meal to warm my cockles (wait, do I have cockles?).
Hint: The Baked Pumpkin Custard is the perfect dessert following a heavy holiday meal. It’s always a great idea to have multiple choices of cookbooks to run to when your loved one wants a little something different to change up a soft diet so stock up and keep them on hand.
