Heated Car Throws – The Perfect Way To Keep The Elderly Toasty While In The Car

It was with a cruel twist of fate that, as my elderly Mom, Gertie, aged, we couldn’t just hunker down in the living room on cold winter days – nope, we found ourselves having to go to more and more doctor appointments no matter the time of year. Living in Maryland, it could be difficult to keep Mom warm during transport to her appointments in the cooler months. One solution I found, besides the obvious of heating up the car and dressing Mom in layers was to wrap Mom in a 12V Heated Car Throw.

How Heated Travel Blankets Work

Heated car blankets plug right into any car’s working cigarette lighter – note, this blanket is for use in a car, not the house. It will not plug into household current. But, in a car, just plug it in, set the temperature and wait for about five minutes for the thing to warm up. Car blankets are just the exact right size to warm a lap and the lower legs or wrap it right around the shoulders of your elderly loved one for an overall warmth.

Note: most newer cars have one cigarette lighter 12V socket which is ‘always on.’ This means that, if you need to run into the store and turn off the car, Mom can still be turned on! Safety tip: Never leave the keys in the ignition with the elderly alone in a car!

We went through two or three heated car throws before we settled on that one you see there to the left, the MAXSA Innovations brand.

With the less expensive heated car throws, we found that

1) they either did not heat up at all (!) or

2) they just didn’t last.

One died after just four short car trips. But, the MAXSA kept on ticking even though Mom is no longer with me. Now it resides in the back of my SUV where it warms the old bones of a few dogs.
