Here’s the scenario: Your elderly Mom or your Grandmother or whomever really needs nothing for Mother’s Day as they have collected everything they’d ever need in life. It’s an oxymoron that, as we age, our stuff grows in numbers yet our homes shrink, sometimes drastically. Wherever does one put all of those past Mother’s Day, Birthday, or Christmas gifts?

The best present for Mother’s day is simple, cheap and very easy – it’s your presence. The elderly only want to be loved and thought of and appreciated. Showing a special senior citizen that you care may be as easy as spending time with them on Mother’s Day (or Father’s Day) and preparing a special tea party.

In this article, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about enjoying a Mother’s Day tea party with the elderly when you visit for an afternoon. I hope that you take this advice to heart and share many memories as you brighten the day of an elderly loved one. You may just find, like I did, that the time shared is more of a present to you than to your elderly friend.

Tip: When having a tea party with the elderly, it’s fun for all to set up the tea in a different room than your elderly loved one may normally visit such as the dining room; this will be like ‘going out’ for them.

A Beautiful New Teacup Is a Great Mother’s Day Tea Party Present

My Mom insisted on bone china to the day she died. For one thing, she loved the delicate patterns and the bright colors in the decorations of bone china tea sets, but she also loved the light weight of the tea cups or mugs. I appear to have inherited her love of bone china also as I have a growing collection of lovely cups (coffee tastes special in them also).

Now, when dealing with the elderly, you might want to consider the dexterity of their hands. If they have acute arthritis, a bone china cup may not be the best bet – it will shatter when dropped. Also, try not to buy bone china tea cups or mugs with dainty handles. That’s not going to work for anyone over 60….

Brew The Mother’s Day Tea In A Pretty Glass Teapot

I’m a fan of tea of all types so it was quite easy for me to steep a pot, lay out pretty china cups and a few cookies in the dining room and surprise Mom with a little tea party, usually for two but, upon occasion, for many more.

Although this article is geared toward Mother’s Day for the elderly, I suggest scheduling a day every 3rd or 4th week to hold one of these senior citizen teas. Asking various people to come with you will add variety to your party

Here’s some really nice little teapots that I like on Amazon.com. These are all glass which allows the tea ‘bloom’ to show though – more on that below. I personally own the first one below and love it.

Flowering Tea Balls

My elderly Mom used to like to watch the flowering tea ‘bloom’ in the glass teapot. It is a very pretty presentation and she delighted in watching to see what the ‘flower’ would end up looking like. These tea balls come in different flavors – jasmine was my Mom’s favorite:

Don’t just buy Oreo cookies (unless they’re an absolute favorite treat..in which case, by all means, lay ’em in!), but going a little more unusual in the selection of cookies or biscuits can be a lot of fun. I’m always a fan of shortbread, as was my Mom.
