Draft Stoppers Help Keep The Elderly Warm

My house was built in 1857 so, when Mom moved in with me after Dad died, I had to put some effort into getting rid of drafty areas in the house. Prior to my going to war with drafts, there was one spot in the living room where I couldn’t even keep a candle lit! Talk about drafty!

So, in the interest of keeping Mom warm and keeping my heating bill as low as possible, Mom and I identified the draftiest parts of the rooms and set about fixing them. We became pretty good at fighting drafts, if I say so myself.

The below items to help  stop drafts are found on Amazon.com. They’re my go-to company for this kind of stuff although some of these items might be carried at your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Walmart stores.

Window Draft Stoppers

My first defense to fighting drafts was to install window film over the windows. ‘Install’ is too strong a word; I simply put the window film up over the window. After that, a quick once-over with a hair dryer and the window film becomes almost undetectable.

And Voila – the candle in the living room now only flickered.

Under Door Double Draft Stoppers

Like my house, the doors were built in 1857. Although they were top quality in their day, these beautiful doors have not weathered well over the years. With temperatures below freezing in winter and over 90 in summer, the passing years have taken their toll – my beautiful doors were slightly warped.

Instead of replacing the doors (which I can’t bring myself to do), I’ve found ways to minimize the drafts caused by the door warping. I had to consider my elderly Mother in the solution; I couldn’t have tripping hazards around.

That’s how I discoverd the best draft stopper for under the door – it’s the one there to the left. I love this double draft stopper by Thermwell as it seems to be a bit more substantial than competitor products. And, with no way for it to slide out from under the door, you’re minimizing the chances of tripping Grandma or Grandpa.

Another benefit to these double door draft stoppers is that, when the door is opened or closed, there’s no need to readjust the position of the draft stopper – it automatically stays under the door. That itself was enough to sell me.

Decorative and Functional Door Draft Stoppers

The only time I used these kind of decorative, yet functional, draft stoppers was in rooms with doors that would never open – like my dining room door that leads to the front porch.
