Gardening Tools For The Elderly – Oh, My Aching Knees!

I’ve never really given much thought to gardening tools for the elderly as my parents were much too busy running their College Park, MD bar (Town Hall) during most of my life. But, that all changed last Saturday with the death of my dear father.

Now, as I go about creating the memorial garden for Dad, I find my hands hurting from holding the regular gardening equipment. Ergonomic gardening equipment is the only thing that helped!

So, off I went to purchase gardening tools for the elderly – aka, me….

Ergonomic Gardening Tools Perfect For Those With Arthritic Hands

On top of my knees weeping for a break, my hands and wrists were killing me from too much gardening with not the right tools. So, off to Amazon I wandered and came up with a shopping cart full of great gardening tools for those with hand problems.

Since ergonomic garden tools are usually adapted to those with problems with their hands, like arthritis, carpal tunnel, or joint problems, gardening is much less painful making it much more enjoyable.

Indoor Gardening Sets

Mom loved her African violets that sat right on a sunny windowsill in the kitchen. But, every two years or so, they needed to be repotted. So, I gave her one of these indoor gardening sets for Mother’s Day one year. She loved the thing.

Raised Garden Beds Make Gardening Fun Again For The Elderly

I first saw these wonderful raised garden beds at the rehab where Mom was recovering from her broken hip. These raised garden beds are great for the elderly as the garden planters have legs so that brings the gardens up to your elderly loved one. And, they’re much easier to tend than garden plots, especially for those with arthritis or any kind of joint pain. They’re also absolutely perfect to raise tasty herbs; variety is the spice of life (sorry….).

Rolling Garden Scooter With Garden Storage And Seat

My local Costco has these rolling garden scooters with a seat, and, if I’d been bright, I would have bought one.

Garden Kneeling Benches

As I mentioned, my knees were not pleased with my gardening plans – that is, until I bought one of these garden kneeling benches. Oh my gosh! What a difference in my knees that evening. No creaking, no popping, and, best of all, no difficult standing or sitting.

If your elderly loved one is a die-hard gardener and poo-poos the idea of using a gardening cart with a seat or a kneeling gardening bench, he or she surely won’t object to one of these very cool garden carts, especially the little red wagon.

Little red wagons were one thing that my Mom (growing up very poor) had to play with. As she told it, she’d spend a lot of time with her Dad in the garden helping him tote his tools and produce to and from the house. And, she used her little red wagon to do it.

Ergonomic Garden Hose Nozzles

I don’t know about you, but, or me, watering the garden is becoming painful due to my arthritic fingers. The ergonomic garden hose nozzles have padded grips all the way around; no hard plastic to try to grasp when it’s wet.
