Vintage Perfumes May Not Only Spice Up The Life Of An Elderly Loved One, But They Might Also Invoke Long-Lost Memories!

Since the sense of smell is the strongest in invoking memories, a gift of a vintage perfume for an elderly woman may well bring back memories of times of old.

While investigating vintage perfumes by the decade, I was surprised to find that some of my favorite perfume scents are very very old. For instance, did you know that Chanel No. 5 was brought to market in 1921? I had no idea that my Mom’s favorite was so old! But, I guess it makes sense as Mom was ‘brought to market’ in 1916….

I think a wonderful present for an elderly woman would be to match her next perfume to a prior decade. Question her about her favorite scents and then present them to her in body lotion and perfume fashion. If dusting powder is available in the scent, all the better!

So, starting with the roaring 20’s, here are some of the most popular perfumes by decade.

Vintage Perfumes From 1920s

Chanel No. 5 was launched in 1921. Perhaps the most famous wearer of this beautiful perfume was Marilyn Monroe in the 60s. Shalimar appeared on the market in 1925.

Perfumes of the 1930s

Tabu was launched as a sexy scent in 1932. Je Reviens followed closely thereafter. And, 1934 saw the advent of Blue Grass by Elizabeth Arden. But, the most popular scent of the 1930s (and the most expensive) was Joy by Jean Patou – it was actually launched in 1929 but is considered a signature scent perfume of the 30s.

Perfumes of the 1940s

Post war, tastes in perfumes turned to a more light, flowery path. Scents such as Miss Dior by Christian Dior showcased in 1947. L’air du Temps by Nina Rucci immediately became the forerunner in the scent world when it came to market in 1948.

Perfumes of the 1950s

The 50s brought many changes and the launch of many new perfume scents. Among the most popular were one of my favorite perfumes in the 1970s, Windsong by Prince Matchabelli (Your Windsong stays on my mind….). For those liking a heavier scent, Youth Dew by Estee Lauder was launched in 1953.

Perfumes of the 1960s

The 1960s were hippie times so there wasn’t much going on, perfume-wise. I suppose there was something with patchoulli in it but the launch of new perfumes was rather slim. One of the most popular perfumes, L’Interdit by Givenchy was created specifically for Audrey Hepburn. And, of course, Avon launched Unforgettable which, in my book at least, was quite forgettable…
