After all, coloring books were never really my thing even when I was a kid. But, a fresh box of Crayola crayons or some new colored pencils and I was IN!

As an adult, I’ve found that a set of coloring books, crayons, or colored pencils works to calm my sometimes overly active mind. It seems like just picking up a crayon gives me a deep sigh of relief.

If you have elderly loved ones, you might try to hop onto the coloring wagon – you just might be surprised at what creativity continues to flow, even from one with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

And, today’s crayons are not necessarily the waxy items of the past. They even come in large sizes so they’re easier for arthritic hands to hold.

The larger size of these crayons makes it easier for elderly hands to grip them. Mom and I both particularly like the triangular crayons – they seem not to hurt our arthritic thumbs.

Note: if giving crayons that refer to them being for children, I suggest repackaging them into a nice separate crayon box. There’s no need for the elderly to know that they’re made for children.

Colored Pencils and Pencil Grips

I like to buy the best quality colored pencils I could find as they seem to just make coloring more of a pleasure. Cheaper pencils seem to leave a residue or not lay down the color as easily.
