My own Mom’s blood pressure would always soar when she was at the doctor’s office. This phenomenon is called ‘White Coat Syndrome’ (aka White Coat Hypertension) and is a common malady to those of us folks who hate going to the doctor.
In addition, because doctor’s office visits only provide a single “picture” of a patient’s blood pressure, medication and treatment can only be advised based on those numbers.
With my Mom, we were able to keep away from blood pressure medicine as I knew her blood pressure was only elevated when seen by a doctor.
How did I know that? I’d monitored Mom’s blood pressure at home four times a day for a month. By reviewing the information I’d recorded, the doctor could clearly see she wasn’t at risk of stroke even though her blood pressure was high always at his office.
That’s how our blood pressure monitor helped her out. And, it can do the same for your elderly loved one.
Blood pressure cuffs come in a few varieties these days – wrist cuffs or upper arm cuffs. Whichever one you prefer, I suggest you take it along to a doctor visit periodically to check that it gives the same reading as the doctor. That way, you’ll know you’re getting a true reading at home.
Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors
These types of monitors are probably the most familiar to those as they’re similar to the method a doctor uses. The monitor is strapped to the arm (it’s very important to put it on correctly!) and a button pushed. The cuff then expands and checks the pressure as it compresses again.
I always took Mom’s blood pressure in her right arm and then in the left. I recorded the time, activity level (sitting, lying down, standing) in a notebook. If you don’t want to take the time to record the blood pressure readings, some of these monitors will allow the storage of up to 100 readings.
Some of these monitors even will send the readings to a cell phone through Bluetooth technology.
