Home Oxygen Concentrators Take Away The Need For Oxygen Tank Deliveries

Our lives changed the day the doctor put my elderly Mom on oxygen. My initial reaction to any new adverse change to Mom’s health status was to panic!

How was I going to handle getting one of those heavy tanks upstairs? Where would it even go in her bedroom with all the other medical supplies like the over-the-bed table and the bedside commode? There simply wasn’t space!

Not only was her bedroom chock full of medical supplies (and, my Mom was fairly healthy), but it was small. I worried about her tripping over the long oxygen cord that would have to be present to connect her to the large oxygen tank I’d have to stow in a corner.

After some research, I found a way to easily fit a portable oxygen concentrator into her room. Her portable unit delivered medical-quality oxygen and was perfect in every way. We even took her home oxygen concentrator along with us on a cruise so she was comfortable and safe.

As way of explanation, a home oxygen concentrator takes room air and cleans it of any gasses. It delivers between 1L and 5L of fresh oxygen just as an oxygen tank would. And, a home oxygen concentrator will never run out of air like an oxygen tank might.

Some portable oxygen concentrators have batteries so they can be used for travel. They also plug into a regular AC plug for daily use. When plugged in, the battery is charged making it fully portable again.

And, as a nice side note, I noticed that oxygen can be a wonderful cure for a hangover (come on now – most caregivers will suffer at least ONE hangover during their caregiving gig). Just make sure that you have your own nasal cannula!

Mom’s hospice care provided nasal cannulas and hoses but I always liked to have extra around in case a dog should chew one (true story….vet trip followed).
