When my own elderly Mom needed extra help in the house besides me, the first thing I did was has a personal safe installed in the attic wall – well, the first thing I did after her pills were stolen….

I had a health care worker who was stealing my Mom’s medications. I didn’t catch this until I went to the pharmacy and they questioned me about the number of pills we needed.

Putting two and two together, I realized Ruth Ann was stealing those pills. And, man, was I mad!

Taught me a lesson though; I never again left the house without counting Mom’s pills and leaving out just enough for Mom to have – there were NO extras lying around!

A personal safe is also the best place to leave important papers such as a will. Note: don’t leave the medical directive locked up. Emergency personnel always look on a refrigerator for this very important directive.

And, jewelry can be locked up too. As memory wanes, the elderly may accuse home care workers of theft of jewelry. If the items were stored in a personal safe, there would be no issue.

And, for travel? A portable personal safe has worked well for those hotels or rental homes where a safe wasn’t available. Note: when traveling, I tend to lock the portable safe into the trunk of the car….

Personal safes can be unlocked with a pass code or a key. Make sure you know where the key is just in case.

Permanent Mounted Personal Safes

For a permanent personal safe, make sure to bolt it either to a wall or to a shelf so that it can’t be carried off.
