We know that nursing homes or retirement homes can be a bit, um, boring. There’s lots of white surroundings, tile floors, acoustic ceilings, etc. There can be little joy surrounding our elderly loved ones.

We also know that Christmas and Chanukah holidays can be especially tough on our elderly friends. Memories of those who have passed remain strong and bring on feelings of sadness or even tears.

That’s why it’s very important to make sure we pep up our senior friends during holiday times. Some simple Christmas decorations might just do the trick – in any case, they can’t hurt!

Instead of the typical poinsettia plants that nursing staff may have to care for, the Christmas decorations I’ve chosen to highlight require no care. Just a quick installation and you’re done.

For the last few years, we’ve had puppies in the house so a real Christmas tree has been out of the question.

Taking a hint from Charlie Brown, we’ve chosen to decorate our house with a small artificial tree. Although the pine scent is missing, a small artificial tree might be just what’s needed to brighten up a nursing home room – note: add some of those battery operated Christmas lights and your loved one will certainly be in the holiday spirit.
