Sensory Toys As A Soothing Activity For Alzheimer’s Or Dementia Patients

Fidgeting and constant movements are two very real symptoms of the disease that some Alzheimer’s or dementia patients exhibit.

And, when these folks do get fidgety? Watch out! Through absolutely no fault of their own, these patients will pick at their skin, their clothes, their hair. They’ll just be ‘unsettled.’

One way to calm them down is to redirect the fidgeting through the use of some interesting sensory toys.

The busier the hands, the more engaged the mind, or so studies will say.

I personally remember my Grandmother who must have had some form of dementia. She was most comfortable, chatting amongst herself (!), when she had something in her hands.

Given a deck of cards, that woman could shuffle and even deal to her invisible mates. I’m telling you, she had a grand old time.

But, without a deck of cards? All bets were off.

Sensory toys would have been a great way to redirect her fidgeting behavior if we had only thought of them.

I had honestly never heard of these until I started in on the research for this article. If your elderly loved one loved to tinker with things in the past, one of these cool lock stations could keep them entertained for hours. In fact, you could hide a few trinkets in the openings to further interest them.

Therapy putty is used mainly to strengthen hand grip when it is lacking – such as after a stroke. But, therapy putty also has a good place in the sensory toy category for those with dementia. Place a bit in the hand of a patient and watch them knead it, stretch it, or just work it around. Sure to stop fidgeting. Note: therapy putty comes in different strengths to help develop a stronger grip. Use the extra soft for those patients who just like to move their hands around.
