Realistic Baby Dolls Have Been Shown To Help Calm (And Delight!) Dementia Patients
I follow a Facebook board which offers comfort and support to those either facing dementia themselves or for the caregivers who care for these people. All types of dementia are discussed such as Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body, or Parkinson’s, etc.
Each of these dementias manifest themselves with certain symptoms.
However, one thing the dementia patients all have in common though, regardless of their diagnosis, is how they react when given realistic baby dolls!
Some caregivers liken the moment to seeing a light come back into their loved one’s eyes. Most dementia patients will hold, rock, and even sing to realistic baby dolls – it’s an amazing transformation.
Doll therapy is catching on in retirement or nursing homes. This article explains why senior citizens can love a baby doll so much – the gist of the article is that offering a baby doll to a dementia patient allows them to tap into emotions and physical contact that is familiar from the past.
Regardless of the reason these realistic babies are useful in a clinical setting, giving the gift of love is always a good thing.
A Few Tips On Ensuring Success With Doll Therapy With A Dementia Patient
In order to set the stage for success, here’s a few ideas to keep in mind when introducing doll therapy to your elderly loved one:
- Offer them the baby doll. Do not force it on them.
If they don’t react to the baby doll:- Place the baby doll nearby, hopefully in view, so that it might attract their attention later
- Try starting a conversation about the doll, such as ‘Doesn’t that baby have pretty eyes?’
- Ask a 3rd party to come in and recognize the doll. Engaging conversation with something like ‘
- Some realistic dolls may have a ‘heartbeat’ and may ‘breath’ which some find comforting. Make SURE the batteries don’t wear out in these types of dolls!
- Make sure the realistic baby doll you get is silent! You certainly don’t want the thing crying!!!! Same goes for wetting – no need for all of that!
- Call the doll by whatever name your love one chooses but, DON’T call it a doll unless your loved one does.
