Pulse oximeters are small devices that fit right onto a fingertip – they do not hurt – at all.

The device measures the amount of SpO2 – or, in normal terms, it measures the amount of oxygen in the blood. Low levels of oxygen can impact breathing, organs, about every aspect of the human body.

A pulse oximeter also measures the pulse rate of the patient. This information, along with the oxygen levels, gives a caregiver an idea of when the patient is not getting enough oxygen which, in these turbulent times, might mean a trip to the emergency room.

Most pulse oximeters run on batteries so make sure to stock up on AAA batteries also. Most will run somewhere around 30 hours of continuous use (which is a lot!) but, I’d be safe and get those batteries anyway.

Caution: Pulse oximeters will always give a correct reading if there is nail polish present. When I was caring for Mom, we always got her a great manicure but left her right index finger clear.

Infared Thermometers

Especially with Covid-19 in the communities, it’s important to monitor the temperature of your loved one. When I was caring for Mom and suspected she was getting ill, I kept a log of her temperature and pulse oximeter so I could tell the doctor exactly what I was seeing. In fact, that first non-contact thermometer I’ve posted there below has a memory that stores the last 32 temperatures.

Blood Pressure Cuffs

I took my Mom’s blood pressure multiple times a day and recorded all of the findings in my log book. That way, I had a pretty good idea of what her bp should be and could spot a trend if it started going up or down. I think that the upper arm blood pressure monitors are more accurate than the wrist type but I’ve added a few of both below.
