1. Safety First With Any Instant Pot. If your elderly friends are anything like my elderly parents were, their kitchens still hold old-style pressure cookers – the ones that haven’t been touched for years because they can ‘blow up.’

   The Instant Pot is designed so that it cannot blow up! Instead, when in pressure cooking mode, the pressure is released by turning a knob on the top after the prescribed cooking time is done (I use a wooden spoon to do that) – that’s called a ‘manual release.’If a ‘manual release’ is still too scary for you elderly loved ones, the instant pot can be left to ‘naturally release’ which means the top can only be opened once the internal pressure has been naturally reduced – this type of release is always longer than a manual release of pressure.

   No more blow ups! Note: there is still steam being released from every instant pot that is under ‘pressure cooker’ mode so burns can occur. It’s best to use a long implement (like my wooden spoon) to release the pressure.
