Also, as we age, our skin thins so there is even more reason for sun protection.

Protect the Elderly with a High SPF Sunscreen

I know that there are data out there that shows any SPF over 30 is not giving any more protection, but I respectfully disagree. The times I’ve slathered on a 50 SPF and have enjoyed a day in the sun, I’ve come home no more tan than when I left.

Therefore, I suggest stronger sunscreens. Heck, even if they offer no more protection than an SPF30, it’s worth the try! For sunscreens to work best, apply them an hour or so before leaving for that sunny day. I prefer spray sunscreen but any of the below are highly rated.

Include a Lip Balm with SPF Into That Beach Bag

Since my lips can freckle (true story…), I prefer wearing a lipstick that has SPF. I apply every time I come out of the ocean or pool and have never had my lips burn.

Sun Shirts Provide SPF Protection From Harmful Sun Rays

My beach bag is always stocked with my favorite light weight sun protection shirts. I wear these in the ocean, in a pool, even in my convertible when the top is down. These sun shirts dry super fast and are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I love the one with the hood below – that way, if it’s windy, your favorite senior citizen friend will be more comfortable.

Note: I prefer to size up when purchasing one of these sun shirts as it’s just more comfortable.

Add An Easy-To-Use Kindle For Your Senior Citizen Friend To Your Beach Bag

These new fangled inventions can sometimes be too much for us old folks. I suggest choosing a simple reading device such as a Kindle or one of the tablets listed below. And, as a bonus, load it up with some good kindle books like my own ‘Senior Citizen 101: Things I Wish I Had Known.’

Large Beach Towels Offer More Room To Sit!

Disclosure: I HATE sand, hate, hate, hate sand! That’s one reason I choose large beach towels to load into my beach bag. Smaller towels just don’t do!

Tip: Did you know that a sprinkle of baby powder will take all sand off extremities. I just learned this fact and stored it away for the next trip to the beach. I did though add in a small container of baby powder. It helps with chaffing also so apply to the upper thighs of your senior citizen friend before hitting the beach.

Comfortable Sandals Are A Must

There’s no reason not to get a pair of comfortable walking sandals for your elderly friend. Although thongs are very comfortable, they might not be the best choice for a senior friend. I’d choose a pair of sandals that has straps around the ankles so that tripping hazards are greatly reduced.
