Activity Aprons Keep Alzheimer’s Patients Busy
My grandmother lived with us for a few years until her dementia (most likely, Alzheimer’s) went into full gear. We then had to find a home for her so that she would remain safe from wandering.
The times we visited ‘Bubbie’ at the Jewish Home in DC, I remember noticing that her hands were always moving – always fidgeting. I now know that this is a typical response to those with Alzheimer’s. I also now know that the best thing we could have done was give her something to fidget with. That’s why these activity aprons are so important for those with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Activity aprons have different kinds of activities built in to keep those fidgeting hands busy. There might be snaps, zippers, or buttons to work. Dressing skills are also strengthened through the use of these aprons.
The kinds of activities on an activity apron not only keep hands busy, they also stimulate the brain – always a good thing for those afflicted with dementia or Alzheimer’s. An activity apron can also reduce boredom and keep those who wander in one spot, at least, for a while!
Note: If your elderly loved one tends to put items into his or her mouth, make sure the items on these activity aprons are not choking hazards!
